The Ones That Stay

Once, when I was spiraling
And the dark was closing in,
I made a list of those that cared for me
Despite my constant sin.
Your names were at the very top
Of that list I wrote,
Though it had been so many months
Since we last had spoke.

I have been made of doubt and soil,
Molasses for my blood.
Crushed by the weight of everything,
But still I understood:
I could wander far and near,
Disowned by all I meet,
And still turn up upon your door
To rest my weary feet.

I am not good,
I am not kind,
I am not worth your time.
But I know in your eyes I am beloved,
As you ever shall be in mine.

They say to love
You must be seen,
And that is an ordeal.
But you have known me
Effortlessly
And by seeing made me real.

Other friends have motivations,
Other friends keep score,
But you, my loves,
Have but one thing that you have asked me for:
Just myself, just as I am,
No jewels or gems adorned.
Just my hand to hold for warmth,
Fingers interlaced with yours.

Doing all the dating things

We're doing all the dating things
Without stating our intentions
Crafting spotify playlists
Like old lovers made mixed tapes
Confessing our feelings
Through song lyrics
Never quite
Saying what we mean
Inching towards a truth
We think we might already know
Our hearts like
Binary stars
Falling into orbit
Around each other
We have a song now
We sing it
Back and forth
In the quiet of the night
In the stillness of the morning
Soft voices
Softer smiles
We skipped the talking part
Went straight to making love
Making plans
Slotting our lives together
Slowly
Tentatively
Inches becoming miles
Doing all the dating things
Because talking's not our style
